Abstract
This study aimed to investigate and compare perceptions of Generation Y?s attributes and motivational preferences from the views of different working generations. Initially, research tool was developed from interviews using Repertory Grid technique to review key words or phases that described Generation Y?s attributes from the literatures. Then the refined words or phases were used to develop questionnaires. Data were collected from 101 Yers and 102 Xers and Baby Boomers. The results showed that Generation Y?s attributes were perceived quite differently among working generations. This indicated a perception gap in the workplace that needed to be managed with care. In general, there was no significant gender difference in Generation Y?s motivational preferences. However, this study found that Generation Y male significantly rated the motivational factors regarding freedom to perform, workplace location, as well as office aesthetics and modernity higher than Generation Y female. Also the results confirmed that different generations needed different types of work motivations. Implications of this study would help expand our world view of Generation Y and generational differences and reshape organizational human resource management for better place to work for all generations.
